Best Buy To Open First Manhattan Store

By Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 4/22/2002

New York - Eighteen months after barreling its way into the New York metro market, Best Buy is poised to penetrate Manhattan.

The new store, to be located in Manhattan's Chelsea area, is scheduled to open this summer, and will be followed by the opening of Best Buy's first Brooklyn location, in the Bensonhurst section, this fall. Five other units will also open in nearby New Jersey and Long Island this year, and are among 60 new Best Buy storefronts nationwide that are scheduled to open in 2002.

Best Buy currently operates 19 stores in the Big Apple area, including the New York City boroughs of Staten Island and Queens. It plans to open three additional stores in 2003 and more Manhattan locations in 2004. It ultimately envisions a total of 35 stores in New York and New Jersey.

'We are committed to expanding our presence throughout New York and New Jersey,' said Best Buy VP/real estate Pat Matre.

The company currently operates about 492 stores nationwide and plans to have some 600 Best Buy storefronts in place by 2004.
