Soundmatters Sub Goes Louder, Deeper

By Staff -- TWICE, 12/18/2006

Soundmatters plans first-quarter shipment of a shoebox-size 250-watt powered subwoofer to complement an existing shoebox-size model with less than half the amplifier output.

SUBstage 250 at $399 MAP features a low-profile corrugated-steel sealed enclosure measuring 4.05 inches by 16.7 inches by 8 inches and delivering bass down to 32Hz through a 6.5-inch driver. It's engineered for horizontal placement under furniture such as couches, or it can be hung on a wall.

The currently available SUBstage 100 has the same dimensions and steel enclosure but reaches down to 35Hz through a 6-inch driver and i100-watt amplifier.

Both models use proprietary technology to couple a spiderless driver with two rectangular moving walls to "effectively create a single 14-inch piston, the company said.

The 250's other features include continuously variable crossover and phase controls, switchable 3dB cut or boost at 70Hz and magnetic shielding. A wall-mount kit is optional.
