Faster Flash Debuts At Photokina

By Staff -- TWICE, 9/29/2008

The bumper crop of high-resolution digital SLRs has spurred flash-memory manufacturers to hit ever-higher data-transfer speeds and larger memory capacities at the Photokina tradeshow.

Pretec set a new industry benchmark with the announcement of a 64GB and a 100GB CF card with a 233x speed rating (for 35MBps transfers).

The company will also ship 32GB and 50GB cards with a 333x speed rating. All the new CF cards feature a metal housing.

The 233x 64GB CF card will carry a $399 retail and ship this month along with the 333x 32GB card for a suggested $630. The 233x 100GB and 333x 50GB models are due to ship before the end of the year. Pricing was not announced.

Lexar Media also boosted the speed on its Professional line of CF cards from 133x to 233x. The UDMA-enabled cards clock in at 35MB/s and will be available in 2GB, 4GB and 8GB capacities. They will ship in October. Pricing was not announced.
