Vudu Expands High Definition Library

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 11/10/2008

Santa Clara, Calif. — Movie-download service Vudu said Monday it has expanded its selection of HD content with more than 1,100 titles.

The service, which delivers movies to customers through a broadband-connected set-top box, said it also plans to continue expanding its HD library in coming weeks, and will be offering a special nationwide promotion through all Best Buy stores.

The new HD titles include mainstream new releases, independent titles and Hollywood classics, the company said.

Titles will be available for both Vudu’s standard instant-start HD and the newly added HDX format, which offers content in Full HD 1080p resolution.

Vudu said it was able to ramp up its content selection by adding an average of over 150 HD titles per week in October.

The online video service said its HD collection now lists more than 10,000 titles.

“We’re certainly proud to offer the largest HD library on the planet, but the motivation to accomplish this really sprang from our customers, retail partners and home-theater installation professionals, all of whom were asking for more HD content,” stated Edward Lichty, Vudu content executive VP “And this is only the beginning of our effort. Our goal is to maintain a leadership position in offering the best picture-quality experience and the deepest library anywhere when it comes to HD.”

The company also announced a new nationwide promotion with Best Buy, offering purchasers of a $299 Vudu internet movie player set-top box $200 in movie credits.

The offer is available starting Monday in over 400 Best Buy stores nationwide and at www.bestbuy.com.

The Vudu movies can be played back instantly on any TV or HDTV and do not require a monthly subscription.
