Best Buy To Bite Big Apple This Fall
By Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 5/5/2000
NEW YORK -- Best Buy's long-awaited entry into the New York market finally will occur this fall.
After first aiming for February and then amending the launch to April, the mega-merchant told TWICE it is now set on opening between 12 and 14 stores here this autumn in advance of the holiday selling season.
Following the first wave of stores, which will range from 30,0000 to 45,000 square feet in size, the company plans to blanket the New York metro area with some 40 additional units over the next three years.
With the opening of three Portland, Ore., stores this spring, New York remains the last major U.S. market to lack a Best Buy presence. Its arrival here will further raise the stakes in one of the nation's largest and most competitive regions, where chief rival Circuit City currently maintains close to 30 superstores.
Best Buy must also contend with such well entrenched local favorites as The Wiz, P.C. Richard, J&R Computer World and 6th Avenue Electronics, as well as a formidable host of national heavyweights including Sears, Staples, RadioShack, Kmart and Target.
