Dell To Ship THX-Certified PCs
By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 1/6/2001
LAS VEGAS -Dell, in partnership with Lucasfilm THX, today introduced the first THX sound certified PCs. Dell is the first computer vendor to take advantage of a program by Lucasfilm to deliver THX-quality sound and picture on PCs.
The first PCs to be THX-equipped are in the Dell Dimension 8100 and 4100 series, with respective prices of $2,599 and $1,999. The PCs feature THX-certified speakers with 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound and software that simplifies setup and allows users to easily switch between THX audio/video settings and settings for other applications on the PC.
The THX-developed software utility, THX Picture and Sound Optimizer, is also included. This guides users through sound card adjustment, speaker placement and other performance-enhancing items.
"We see the PC rapidly expanding its role as an entertainment content-delivery service, so it's natural for THX to apply our two decades of experience and expertise in sound and image reproduction to this new category," said Monica Dashwood, Lucasfilm THX general manager.
THX and Dell engineers worked for 18 months to develop the proper sound system for these computers, the company said.
