Marantz Announces PDPs, 3-Chip DLP Deliveries

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 1/26/2004

Marantz America used CES to introduce three plasma displays, and a high-performance three-chip DLP front projector.

The new plasma displays join the current 50W-inch model, and include the new flagship 61W-inch PD6140D and a pair 42W-inch panels in the PD4240D and PD4220V. All include DVI-HDCP inputs.

Both the PD6140 and the PD4240 are true high-definition monitors, capable of displaying 480p or 720p progressive scan images. The PD4220V is an 853 by 480 EDTV panel. All three models will also display images from a computer up to UXGA resolution, and automatically scale or upconvert video sources as necessary.

The PD6140D, which ships this month at a $20,999.99 suggested retail, features a newly designed 1,365-by-768 pixel panel with integrated advanced video processing and intelligent scan conversion technologies. Besides DVI-HDCP digital input, the panel includes RGB, component RCA, S-Video and composite video inputs, as well as multiple audio inputs.

The PD4240D, which is shipping now at a $8,499.99 suggested retail, includes virtually the same feature set as the PD6140D.

Marantz's PD4220V, which ships in April at a $6,499 suggested retail, is said to offer a new price/performance benchmark EDTV-level plasma displays.

Marantz also demonstrated its three-chip DLP VP-10S1 high-definition projector, which will be available in February 2004 at a $37,999.99 suggested retail, including the lens. The unit incorporates three Texas Instruments' HD2 1,280 by 720 DMD chips.
