Royal Releases Its Lowest Priced Windows PDA
By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 1/6/2001
LAS VEGAS -Royal will show at CES the lowest-cost "Windows CE-based" organizer to date, called the DV5, at an estimated price of $169.
The DV5 uses a Windows CE kernel but a proprietary Royal user interface, which is icon based and simpler to use, Royal claimed. The device ships with a soft 33.6 modem, 8MB of memory, and PC cradle with out-of-the box synchronization to most leading PIMs.
The company will also show its previously announced Linux-based PDA (which boots up in Linux) code-named the Davinci DV6. It is expected to come with either 8MB or 16MB of memory, a 240 x 160-pixel LCD, and a CompactFlash slot (for modems).
Shipping is targeted for late first quarter or early second quarter at $199 to $249. It will be followed by the color version, DV7, late in the second quarter or early third quarter at $199 to $249.
Under Royal's new Vista line of organizers, the company will introduce several touch-panel versions (previous models were keyboard-based).
They will include the VT1 with 1MB of RAM, which is sold with a plug-in keyboard, PC synchronization software and filters to all major PIM programs at a suggested retail price of $69.99. The VT 2, 2MB version will have a suggested retail price of $89.99. A 4MB unit may also be available.
