JVC Unveils D-ILA Prototype

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 9/29/2003

INDIANAPOLIS — JVC used CEDIA to mark its return to the D-ILA rear-projection category by showing a prototype rear-projection HDTV display based on a new chip design.

JVC said it may introduce a new generation of D-ILA home theater products next year, after a brief flirtation with the technology in its now discontinued D'Ahlia model. The company's professional products group, however, has continued to offer a full line of D-ILA front projectors for high-end home theater and commercial markets.

The demonstration model in the booth of the consumer products group was 60W-inches and listed as the Z795. It was based on a new 0.7-inch 720p D-ILA chip, which JVC has earmarked for rear-projection applications.

JVC's Professional group, meanwhile, introduced a new three-chip D-ILA home theater front projector called the DLA-HX1U. It features a 16:9 native aspect ratio and 1,400 by 768 resolution, and will carry a $11,995 suggested retail price when it ships in December.

JVC's consumer group also unveiled its first LCD TVs including a 26W-inch with 1,024 by 768 resolution and DVI-HDCP. It will ship in October at a $2,999 suggested retail price.

At the same time, JVC will ship a 42W-inch HD plasma monitor, which will carry a $6,499 suggested retail price. The PDP will offer 1024 by 768 resolution and will carry DVI-HDCP inputs.

JVC said it will also offer EchoStar's hi-def PVR in the TU-DVR921 under its brand.

The unit will include a dual-tuner DISH Network HD capable satellite receiver that outputs 480i, 480p, 720p and 1,080i signals. It features DVI-HDTV with HDCP content protection and component video outputs, "DishWire" A/V connector for use with select IEEE 1394 products, and integrated 8VSB and NTSC tuners for reception of off-air analog and digital broadcasts.

The PVR will include a 250GB hard drive, and will carry a nationally advertised price of $999.95.
