CEA Sees More Game Growth

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 1/29/2001

ARLINGTON, VA. - Factory sales of video game hardware and software will surpass $10.1 billion this year, up more than 18.7 percent from 2000 levels, according to data from the Consumer Electronics Association.

Hardware component factory value is estimated as having increased 20 percent last year over 1999 totals, to $2.7 billion. The estimated factory value of hardware should eclipse $3.1 billion this year, a 16.7 percent rise, CEA said.

According to Cahners In-Stat market research, Sony's PlayStation 1 platform led all gameplayer sales in 2000, with twice as many unit sales as the second-ranked PlayStation 2. Sega's Dreamcast and Nintendo's N64 completed the ranking.

Game software, meanwhile, is expected to climb 19.7 percent over the $5.85 billion in factory dollars generated in 2000. Factory value of software sales in 2001 should hit $7 billion, according to CEA.
