Telex Enters PC Speakers

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 4/29/2002

Pro audio maker Telex will jump into the consumer PC market next month with the launch of a three-piece speaker set.

Telex's first entry is the Electro Voice (EV) SonicXS, which was shown here at RetailVision. It features two satellite speakers and a subwoofer and was designed to appeal specifically to the high-end gamer. By using the Electro Voice brand name Telex is trying to take advantage of its following in the pro audio area where it has built sound systems and speaker for a wide variety of rock bands and arenas, a company spokesman said.

The EV SonicXS, which will carry a $199 suggested retail price, pushes 60-watts per channel through the satellites and 125 watts through the long-throw subwoofer will ship in June. The SonicXS will be followed by a 4.1 system in July or August and the company expects to ship a 5.1 model for the holiday selling season.

The Telex engineers incorporated a great deal of the technology from their professional products into the consumer models, the spokesman said. This included an industrial design that has the speakers look like those used in clubs and satellite speakers that have a larger than average foot-print in order to house 4-inch drivers, he said.
