1GHz AMD Duron To Ship In 2001

Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 12/4/2000

LAS VEGAS -AMD is readying for release next year its next-generation processors, which will bring 1GHz processing speeds to midrange-priced PCs, and has committed itself to regaining the ground in the entry-level PC market that it lost this year to rival Intel.

AMD's road map has new processors coming out in all its product categories by the early second half of 2001. In the Duron family, geared toward PCs costing $1,000 and less, speeds will range from 800MHz to 900MHz, and by the end of the year PCs with 1GHz Duron processors will be available, said Linda Kohout, AMD's product marketing manager.

By the summer of 2002, computers priced at $599 and below will carry 950MHz Duron chips with the $999 models featuring 1.1GHz processors.

At this time AMD will hit the 2GHz level in its high-end Athlon line, but for next year the company will have 1.5GHz-speed chips in mass production. These processors will be part of AMD's eighth generation of chips, dubbed the Hammer series.

At 0.13 microns thick, the Hammer models are smaller than the 0.18 micron chips now available and use a x86-64 architecture, enabling PCs to run 64-bit applications.

By second-quarter 2001 the lowest-speed Athlon will be a 1.1GHz model.
