Hewlett-Packard Outsells Dell In Notebooks

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 12/18/2006

Hewlett-Packard posted a stunning increase in worldwide unit share for the third quarter, growing 36.3 percent compared with the previous quarter, according to a new report from DisplaySearch.

The research firm said HP's growth was about twice the industry average, while Dell's was a bit below that level during the third quarter. However, in the North American market Dell retained its lead over HP by the slimmest of margins, with 20.1 percent of the market compared with HP's 19.9, said John Jacobs, DisplaySearch's director of notebook market research.

Jacobs credited HP's retail presence for its third-quarter surge.

DisplaySearch also noted that notebooks with wide aspect screens comprised 79 percent of the worldwide market. The North American market was even more enthusiastic for this screen type with 85 percent of all notebooks being sold having a wide aspect ratio, Jacobs said.
