P.C. Richard Planning New Jersey Expansion

Carteret, N.J. — P.C. Richard & Son is preparing a major push into New Jersey.
The metro New York retailer already operates a dozen stores in the Garden State. But according to a report in today’s New York Times, the country’s largest independently owned electronics and appliance chain moved into a 300,000-square-foot warehouse here last month that it will use to extend its reach west and north of New York City.
The leased facility, located near Staten Island, houses a distribution and employee training center, and replaces a smaller operation in northern New Jersey. The company also purchased a 64,000-square-foot building on the grounds that will become a store and outlet center.
CEO Gary Richard and his son Gregg, who is president of the company, were not immediately available for comment. But the younger Richard, great grandson of founder Peter Christian Richard, told the Times that the Carteret operation positions the retailer for its “next round of growth” in New Jersey, which could draw customers from as far west as Pennsylvania.
The $1.5 billion business, which turns 100 this year, maintains its headquarters and a primary training facility and million-square-foot distribution center on Long Island in Farmingdale, N.Y.
