MEGA Group Fall Show Breaks Sales, Attendance Records

By Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 11/20/2006

MEGA Group USA's Fall Convention and Buying Show, held recently at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort, here, was the largest in the buying group's history, breaking both attendance and sales records, executive said.

"The tremendous attendance of the dealers was the key to this landmark success," said Rick Bellows, MEGA's appliance division manager. "The deals that the vendors provided, based on [the group's] tremendous increase in volume in 2006, were a perfect combination to create an explosive type of business atmosphere."

The event, themed "It's a Mega World After All," began with roundtable discussions on a series of business-building topics including:

  • private-label consumer financing;

  • financial statements and how to compile, read and leverage them;

  • marketing techniques using print, mail and the electronic media;

  • product protection plans and how they can be a simple key to improving business; and

  • using delivery and accessories as a profitable add-on to every sale

Also on tap were vendor presentations and product discussions for the group's core furniture, major appliance, consumer electronics, lawn and garden, and rent-to-own categories, as well as program, pricing and new product meetings with vendors.

Division manager Jerry Honea noted that the vendor meetings are perhaps the most important aspect of MEGA's semiannual conventions. "Vendors don't give the independent dealers much face-to-face time any more," he noted. "There has to be some personal interaction for a product line to succeed in dealers' stores, and these vendor sessions are the golden opportunities."

Whirlpool sales director Mark Hecht agreed: "We were able to show new product and meet face-to-face with the MEGA dealers," he said. "The response to the new Epic laundry pair was tremendous and Whirlpool is looking forward to a strong fourth quarter with MEGA. This was a great show."

The trade show itself was held in the Coronado's massive 125,000-square-foot exhibition hall, where some vendors reported "writing more business than ever" thanks to an early opening, said MEGA division manager Deryl Sewell. Added Jim Sendrak, manager of MEGA's electronics division, "Our traffic on the floor has been extraordinary. The dealers have focused on business and delivered for our prime vendors."

MEGA's Spring 2007 convention will be held March 3-6 at the Renaissance resort in Nashville, Tenn. For more information, call (888) 332-3344 or visit www.megagroupusa.com.
