Philips Discontinues Its LCoS TV Production

ATLANTA — Philips Consumer Electronics announced it has discontinued production of its Cineos Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) rear-projection televisions, and cut the suggested retail prices of remaining models by $500.
“The market for microdisplays has commoditized quicker than we expected, and although significant progress on our side has been made in the technology, the ongoing investment that we are requiring is no longer justified in relation to the position of microdisplays in our portfolio,” the company said in a prepared statement.
A Philips spokesperson said the company will continue to market its CRT-based rear-projection televisions, and “we will continue to have a microdisplay solution in 2005, but I don't know what that is going to be.”
Effective immediately, remaining Cineos single-chip LCoS sets will carry the following suggested retail prices:
The 44W-inch 44PL9523 is $2,299. The 55W-inch 55PL9223 is $2,499; the 55PL9524 is $2,999; and the 55PL9774 is $2,999. The 62W-inch 62PL9524 is $3,299, and the 62W-inch 62PL9774 is $3,499.
In other news, parent company Royal Philips Electronics said it will sell its television assembly plant in Kwidzyn, Poland, to Jabil Circuit Inc. Jabil will continue to assemble televisions at the plant for Philips, complementing the Kwidzyn PCB manufacturing facility Jabil acquired from Philips in 2002.
Philips said the sale of the plant was part of its Business Renewal Program, which is “designed to strengthen Philips' global competitive position by simplifying the organization and lowering costs.”
