Dell Names President, Reorganizes Operations

By John Laposky -- TWICE, 2/15/2007

Round Rock, Texas — Dell has named Michael Cannon president, global operations, effective Feb. 26, as part of a reorganization of its global structure.

Cannon, most recently president/CEO of Solectron, will report to Michael Dell, who recently returned to his role as chairman/CEO of Dell.

Cannon will lead a new global organization that will combine all of Dell’s manufacturing, procurement and supply-chain activities.

Dell also announced that it will add new manufacturing facilities in Poland, India and Brazil “to meet the growing needs of customers in emerging markets.” Dell currently has nine manufacturing plants in five countries, including the United States.

“As we continue to grow worldwide, it is important that we increase our ability, via the direct model, to manufacture close to our customer and fully integrate our supply chain into one global organization,” said Dell in a release. “This will allow us to drive for even greater excellence in quality, cycle time and delivered cost. We will innovate and adapt our supply-chain model to help drive differentiated product design, manufacturing and distribution models.”

Previous to Cannon’s stint at Solectron, a provider of electronics manufacturing services, he was president, CEO and director of Maxtor, the provider of hard-disk drives and storage systems that is now part of Seagate Technology. Cannon also worked at IBM’s storage systems division. He began his career at Boeing, where he held engineering and manufacturing positions.

Cannon serves on the boards of Adobe Systems, Seagate and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group. He is also a member of the U.S. Business Roundtable serving on the International Trade and Investments Task Force.

Cannon’s appointment and Dell’s reorganization is the latest in a string of personnel changes and adjustments as Dell has lost share and struggled with its long-standing direct-to-customer model.
