LG Wins 1st Round In Majap Patent Case

By Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 6/16/2008

Washington, D.C. — An administrative law judge has recommended that the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) should terminate two elements of Whirlpool’s ongoing patent infringement case against LG Electronics.

Whirlpool also asked the ITC to terminate the two patent issues — for certain freezer drawer technology — after LG obtained evidence that they are invalid.

Three other Whirlpool patents remain pending at the ITC.

Whirlpool is also suing LG for patent infringement in the United States District Court of Delaware, although the majap maker has asked that court to dismiss proceedings involving the two invalid patents. Whirlpool has also provided a public copy of its covenant not to further sue LG on those patents.

LG has also filed two patent lawsuits against Whirlpool in the Federal District Courts. In those proceeding, Whirlpool has asserted counter claims based on certain patents, but has already withdrawn one of those patents, LG said.
