AHAM Reports Sales Down In Jan.

WASHINGTON, D.C . -Wholesale sales of white goods were in the red during January, as factory shipments fell 18.2 percent off year-ago totals.
According to factory sales data collected by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), total shipments fell to 3.5 million units from the 4.2 million machines shipped in January 2000.
Taking the biggest hit was the home comfort category, which declined 44.7 percent to 193,400 units. Of those, 177,000 units were room air conditioners, representing a 45.8 percent decline from year-ago shipments of 326,200 units.
The cooking category was the second largest casualty in January, falling 29.3 percent from last year. Within that sector, microwave ovens saw the steepest declines-down 42.2 percent to 476,600 units.
Cooking's sole ray of light came from built-in gas ranges, which managed a 9.2 percent gain to 5,000 units last month.
Also showing signs of life was the food preservation category. Although total category sales were off by nearly 6 percent, shipments of chest-type freezers soared 19.2 percent to 72,400 units.
Declines were also slighter within the home laundry category. The sector's 7.4 percent drop was led by automatic washers, down 11.2 percent.
Overall, AHAM's representative AHAM 6 category, which includes washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers and ranges, posted a single-digit loss of 8.5 percent to 2.4 million units.
