HP To Showcase DLP RPTV Family

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 9/5/2005

Hewlett-Packard will use CEDIA Expo to showcase four DLP-based rear-projection HDTV sets — split between 1,080p and 720p resolution — in its Pavilion home theater series. All models feature fully integrated ATSC tuning and digital-cable-ready CableCARD slots.

HP will offer one model each in the 50W-inch and 65W-inch screen sizes, and two models (720p and 1,080p) in the 58W-inch screen size.

All models include HP's Visual Fidelity resolution-enhancing technologies to produce a smoother high-definition picture, eliminating the “screen door” effect common to some microdisplay TV technologies, the company said.

In addition, the new sets were designed to simplify installation by including a lighted front connectivity panel to assist in cable management. The sets will allow fine-tuning color and sound via remote control for up to 10 input sources. Sets also include four preset picture modes and three preset audio modes.

All models also feature the following video source inputs: HDMI, HD component video, S-video and coaxial cable. Image brightness for each model is aided with a 150-watt ultra-wide bulb.

Audio is handled with a built-in 2.1-channel system with 85 watts of total peak power, SRS TruSurround XT capability and an integrated subwoofer, eliminating the need for additional sound components.

The 50W-inch MD5020n ($2,499.99 suggested retail) uses a Texas Instrument Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) offering 1,280 by 720 native resolution. The contrast ratio on the set is listed as 2,200:1.

HP will also present a pair of 58W-inch models offering either native 720p resolution or 1,080p HD resolution using HP's patented “wobulation” technology.

The MD-5820n ($3,099.99) is a 720p model carrying all the features of the MD5020n.

The HP Pavilion MD5880n ($4,299.99) is a 58W-inch model featuring 1,080p HD resolution. HP said the set will produce a 12,000:1 contrast ratio using HP's DynamicBlack technology, which when combined with a 7-segment color wheel improves image sharpness, and black level.

The Pavilion MD6580n ($5,499.99) represents HP's largest screen size at 65W inches. The unit carries all the features of the MD5880n.
