CEDIA Expo 2008: Epson Presents 3 1080p 3LCD Projectors

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 9/4/2008

Epson America (booth 220) is presenting at this week's CEDIA Expo three 3LCD video projection systems for home theater audiences, including an under-$2,000 1080p unit with 2,000 lumens of brightness.

The lower-cost model is joined by a pair of step-up pieces at estimated street retails of less than $3,000 and $4,500, respectively. These add performance enhancements and extras important to custom installation audiences, such as Imaging Science Foundation (ISF) calibration and color isolation. All three offer Epson's 2-year warranty.

Epson said the Home Cinema 6100 ($1,999 estimated street price) is being targeted at home entertainment and AV enthusiasts "looking for a competitive home theater solution at a competitive price point."

In addition to offering full 1920-by-1080 resolution, the projector boasts 2,000 lumens of brightness and a contrast ratio of 20,000:1.

It uses Epson's D7 3LCD chip set, a Cinema Filter feature that is said to deliver larger color space for improved color accuracy, an Opticinema lens (2.1 zoom ratio), a new dust-filtration system and 22dB fan noise level.

Six color modes — dynamic, living room, natural, theatre, theatre black 1, theatre black 2 — and x.v.Color process are included, and the HDMI 1.3a connectivity adds Deep Color support.

The cabinet measures 17.7 inches wide by 15.4 inches deep by 5.7 inches high and weighs 16 pounds.

Epson's PowerLite Pro Cinema 7100 is billed as a high-performing home theater projector targeting A/V elitists. Carrying a $3,000 estimated street price, the unit offers full 1080p resolution, 2,000 lumens of brightness and a 20,000:1 contrast ratio.

In addition, it adds ISF calibration and color isolation for customized picture settings .

The unit uses Epson D7 3LCD chipset, a Cinema Filter feature for larger color space and accuracy, color isolation for color filter adjustment without color filter glasses, Opticinema lens (2.1 zoom ratio) and dust filtration, and includes a spare lamp, ceiling mount and cable cover.
