JVC Re-Launches El Kameleon

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 1/7/2008

JVC is bringing back the 2008 El Kameleon "black-out" receiver in an in-dash DVD player with a built-in 3.5-inch monitor.

First introduced in 1999, the El Kameleon goes into "stealth mode," appearing black when the car is not in use, as a theft deterrent. The new model adds a proximity sensor that "wakes up" the unit when the driver's hand nears the radio for touch control via electrostatic technology.

The KD-AVX44 A/V unit has a "no button" design, built-in Bluetooth, and HD-Radio and satellite radio capability. It has a USB port for iPod control and a split-screen display for a visual iPod search. It also has Dolby 5.1 surround, seven-band equalizer, 5-volt line/subwoofer output, and gold-plated A/V input and output terminals, and it accepts an optional CD changer and rear-view camera. It will ship in February at a suggested retail of $729.

The new proximity sensor is also available on a double-DIN in-dash DVD with 7-inch monitor called the KD-AVX810 (without the black-out face) at $729.
