Public WLANS: Carrier Opportunity

Staff -- TWICE, 6/17/2002

Cellular carriers have the potential to become forces in the public Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) business, research group In-Stat/MDR says.

In surveying early adopters of wireless Internet services, In-Stat found that virtually all are at least somewhat interested in using WLANs in public places and that the majority would prefer to purchase WLAN service through their wireless carrier.

A total of 19 percent of wireless Internet users already use public WLANs, the survey found, and 33 percent were extremely interested in using them in the future.

"With their billing skills and substantial existing customer bases, cellular providers are in a unique position to take advantage of this interest," said In-Stat director Becky Diercks.

In-Stat is owned by TWICE parent Reed Business Information.
