Def Jam Founder, VTech Plan Promo

By Greg Scoblete -- TWICE, 1/29/2001

LAS VEGAS -Russell Simmons, founder of Def Jam Records, announced plans at CES earlier this month to promote a line of communications products and services in partnership with VTech Connect and Connecticut-based Shared Technologies Cellular (STC), a nationwide Integrated Communications Provider.

The program, which begins in the second quarter, will deliver prepaid nationwide communications services such as cellular, PCS, long distance, one-way alphanumeric paging, two-way paging, Internet access and local dial-tone services.

STC is the service back-end, while VTech supplies the hardware and Simmons' RUSH Communications provides the promotion.

According to a VTech spokesperson, the company currently manufactures all of the associated hardware products, except for cellular phones, in North America. VTech manufactures cellular phones in an overseas facility and is exploring whether to employ its own cellular phone products or outsource production to a North American manufacturer.

All hardware will be co-branded RUSH Communications and VTech.

Consumers will have access to all of these services with the purchase of a single calling card, which will be bundled with VTech products and sold separately in RUSH Communicator kiosks.

Once the consumer buys a communications product and chooses from various card denominations ($10, $30, $50 and $100), the consumer will call a toll-free number for activation.
