Integrated DVD Deck Sales Rise

Not surprisingly, DVD-hungry consumers are increasingly reaching beyond standalone DVD players and are opting for integrated DVD systems, such as home theater-in-a-box with DVD and portable DVD players, according to sales-to-dealer figures released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).

Unit sales of systems with DVD players, which include compact/shelf systems with DVD and home theater-in-a-box with DVD, jumped 129 percent over second quarter 2000 results to 213,774 units, with dollar sales of $88.2 million — an increase in revenue of 112 percent, CEA said. Year-to-date unit sales of systems were up 348 percent to 418,976 units with a 306 percent increase in revenue to $169 million in sales.

Sales of mobile and portable DVD players during the second quarter of 2001 reached 67,940 units with dollar sales of $57.7 million, while year-to-date sales arrived at 100,320 units and $63.5 million in dollar sales.

Total second quarter unit sales of DVD players, including mobile and portable players, gained 44 percent over the same period in 2000 with 2.3 million units sold. Revenue from total sales during the second quarter increased 27 percent to $451.6 million. Year-to-date unit sales for total DVD were up by 74 percent to 4.8 million units sold. Total dollar sales for the year also increased by 49 percent to $957.8 million.
