Cowboy Maloney's Holds 10th Anniv. Party For DirecTV

By Steve Smith -- TWICE, 6/21/2004

Cowboy Maloney's and DirecTV celebrated the home satellite system's 10th anniversary at the retail chain's headquarters store last Thursday, where the first system was sold in the United States on June 17, 1994.

DirecTV and Cowboy Maloney's CEO Con Maloney pulled out all the stops for this event, from having local football legend Archie Manning there to sign autographs to having Thomson's RCA dogs "Chipper" and "Nipper" there for photos. In addition, the City of Jackson proclaimed last Thursday "DirecTV Day" during a presentation at the headquarters store.

Both companies held a golf tournament and a reception Wednesday night for "visiting dignitaries" such as Sirius' president/CEO Joe Clayton, who spearheaded Thomson's introduction of DirecTV a decade ago. Current executives from Thomson, such as Michael O'Hara, executive VP/Consumer Solutions Business and a member of Thomson's DirecTV launch team a decade ago, were also in attendance.

Maloney said, "We've had a great relationship with DirecTV over the past 10 years, and we are proud to have introduced this technology."

Among the other events to that drew consumers to the store were:

  • The first 100 people to enter the store were eligible to buy a Thomson-brand TiVo for $10;

  • Ten percent off "our lowest price," Maloney said, on all products in the store on Thursday;

  • Food and refreshments for 5,000 guests and consumers;

  • And, believe it or not, a casting call in the store's parking lot for the CBS-TV reality show "Survivor."
