Single-Digit Gains For Autosound In 2001

ARLINGTON, VA. -Autosound sales continued to rise in 2000, with the aftermarket growing by 5 percent on the heels of 11 percent growth in 1999, according to annual statistics from the Consumer Electronics Association annual statistics.

Total aftermarket sales in 2000 were estimated at a factory value of $2.18 billion compared with $2.07 billion in 1999. Sales are expected to grow by only 1.6 percent in 2001, reaching a factory value of $2.21 billion, according to CEA forecasts.

The OEM autosound market continued to experience slim but steady growth at 3.4 percent in 2000, compared with 2.8 percent in 1999, achieving estimated sales of $2.7 billion in 2000, up from $2.61 billion in 1999. The OEM market is expected to grow 2.8 percent this year to $2.78 billion, said CEA.

Charting the strongest gains in car audio for all categories tracked by the association is car security, which rose 6.3 percent to sales of $218 million last year. The market rebounded as predicted from a 3 percent decline in 1999 and is expected to grow further in 2001, by 4.1 percent to $227 million.

Radar detector sales gained 3 percent in 2000 to an estimated $170 million, up from $165 million in 1999. That category is expected to see the strongest growth in 2001, at 5.3 percent, increasing to $179 million in sales, according to CEA forecasts.
