Microsoft Names Porter To Head Retail Effort

Opening Dates And Store Locations Not Announced

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 2/13/2009

Redmond, Wash. — Microsoft today appointed David Porter as retail stores VP, stating he will head the software giant’s branded retail store effort.

Porter has been charged with developing Microsoft’s retail rollout, including when and where the stores will open, and he will work with the company’s existing retail partners. He will answer to Microsoft COO Kevin Turner.

Last month Microsoft announced it was opening a 20,000-square-foot “experience” at its headquarters, here, housing a complete interactive store environment, from point of service to receiving dock. The company said it opened the center to demonstrate how Microsoft and the retail industry can address rising consumer expectations and competitive pressures during today's challenging economic conditions.

The store’s purpose, as stated today by Microsoft, is similar — to create a deeper engagement with its customers, enabling Microsoft to learn firsthand about their needs.
Microsoft would not comment on any aspect of its upcoming stores.

Porter came from DreamWorks Animation SKG where he was head of worldwide product distribution; previously he spent 25 years with Wal-Mart where he was VP and GM of entertainment.
