Sennheiser Headphones Have New Transducer Technology

By TWICE Staff -- TWICE, 3/9/2009

Sennheiser’s HD 800 headphones boast new transducer technology from the company.

Measuring 56 mm, the transducer in the HD 800 is the largest that can currently be found in a dynamic headphone, according to the company. The more transducer surface area that vibrates, the purer the headphone sounds at low frequencies, Sennheiser said.

“However, transducers with a large surface area have the disadvantage that, at high frequencies, undesired resonances occur at the diaphragm, resulting in distortions in sound reproduction. The new design principle of the HD 800 resolves this dilemma,” the company said in a release.

The frequency response is listed as 6Hz to 51,000 Hz.

Circumaural ear cups are engineered to fit comfortably around the ears without aggressive lateral pressure, and the material used for the ear pads is Japanese Alcantara, which is billed as being “friendly to the skin and easy to clean.”

Scheduled to be available at the end of this month, the HD 800 will retail for a suggested $1,399.
