Cellphones Take On Outdoor GPS Units

By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 12/18/2008

Little Rock, Ark. — Wireless carrier Alltel Wireless launched an application it contends will make outdoor GPS units obsolete.

Hikers, campers and other outdoor enthusiasts “can avoid the need to purchase the expensive mobile GPS devices that many currently use,” the carrier claimed in launching the downloadable Trimble Outdoors application. The app is available for a range of Alltel phones for $39.99/year, $5.99/month or $1.99/day.

The app lets users review and plan trips online, then send routes, maps and waypoints wirelessly to the phone for guidance during trips. Customers can also track their current and previous routes with a “bread crumb trail,” mark and edit waypoints during a journey, and use a built-in digital compass to display coordinates, speed and heading. Maps can be displayed on the phone with topographic, street and aerial views. Trimble Outdoors also enables GPS-tagged online journaling at Trimbleoutdoors.com.

The application is compatible with the Motorola V3A, V3C, V3M, V9M and K1M; the Samsung Muse; LG AX656 and AX8600; and the BlackBerry Curve 8330 and Pearl 8110.
