HP Unveils Revamped Imaging Line

Palo Alto, Calif. — The departure of its high-profile CEO has evidently not dimmed Hewlett-Packard's enthusiasm for mega product launches, which it dubs “big bangs,” as the company rolled out a suite of new photo printers and digital cameras packed with a number of company firsts.
The products include the first-ever dedicated 4- by 6-inch photo printer with a built-in hard disk drive, the company's first hard-bundled digital camera that docks directly to a 4- by 6-inch photo printer, a printer capable of producing a photo print in 14 seconds, and a new brand for its dedicated 4- by 6-inch printers.
The company has also integrated technology from its digital still cameras — called Real Life technologies — into its new printers. Select models will automatically remove red-eye from imported images before printing them.
The Photosmart 8250 can print a 4- by 6-inch photo in 14 seconds, black documents at up to 32 pages per minute (ppm) and 30 ppm in color. The unit uses six individual ink tanks with a “page completion” feature which can estimate based on the print job how much ink will be required and notify users if they don't have enough ink to finish the print.
The 8250 offers a resolution of 4,800 dpi, a 2.5-inch LCD, a dedicated tray for 4- by 6-inch photo paper and an “auto sense” scanner that can detect select HP papers' size and type to optimize performance. The unit can also produce prints from a video file without using the PC.
In the hot-selling 4- by 6-inch photo printer category, HP will introduce two new models under the “GoGo” brand. The Photosmart 475 GoGo photo printer is the first photo printer on the market to integrate a 1.5GB hard disk drive, for storing images transferred from memory cards or a PC. The unit features a built-in handle, 2.5-inch LCD and an optional battery pack. It can print 4- by 6-inch, 5- by 7-inch and 4- by 12-inch panoramic photos.
The 475 can print a 4- by 6-inch photo in one minute and can print individual frames of video footage captured by a digital camera. The printer offers several frames and borders which can be added to images before they're printed. The 475 can connect to a TV and includes a remote control. It will ship in August for a suggested $279.
HP will also take aim at Kodak's printer dock bundle with its own Photosmart 428 GoGo Photo Studio, which combines a 4- by 6-inch printer with a camera specifically designed to dock in the printer (the camera will also be sold separately).
The printer features a 2-inch LCD screen and prints with the touch of one button when the camera is docked and turned on. The camera will feature 5-megapixel resolution and a 3x optical zoom lens. The Photo Studio will ship in September for a suggested $329.
Finally, the company introduced the Photosmart 33100 all-in-one with the largest LCD screen to date on a printer at 3.6 inches. The unit features built-in wireless networking, fax capability, a built-in slide and negative adapter and six individual ink tanks.
It can print black documents at 32 ppm and color documents at 31 ppm. It can also produce a 4- by 6-inch photo in 14 seconds and is capable of producing borderless photos up to 8.5- by 24-inches at 4,800 dpi.
It will ship in September for a suggested $399.
