PCIA Closes Event

By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 9/24/2001

The Personal Communications Industry Association (PCIA) canceled its GlobalXChange event, here, on the day it was to open, Sept. 11.

Planes carrying people headed for the show were grounded. One of the planes headed for Los Angeles was American flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon and carried industry executive Steven Jacoby, COO of wireless messaging carrier Metrocall. About 200 companies were planning to exhibit at the show.

In a statement, the organization said its decision "was anguished but not difficult."

PCIA's staff was relocated away from the city, except a small contingent remained at the Los Angeles convention center to manage the event's closing.
