Grandstream Debuts Multimedia IP Phone

By John Laposky -- TWICE, 4/20/2009

Grandstream Networks has introduced a plug-and-play IP multimedia telephone that allows free peer-to-peer video telephony as well as Web browsing and social-networking applications.

The new GXV3140 IP multimedia phone uses Grandstream's preconfigured peer-to-peer technology to make video calls instantly when a user plugs the device into a broadband router.

The device features a 1.3-megapixel tilting CMOS camera with privacy shutter, a 4.3-inch 480- by 272-pixel color LCD screen, dual Ethernet ports, SD and USB ports, a stereo headset jack, TV-out, stereo audio-out and a full duplex speakerphone.

It supports a full HTML Web browser, IM with Yahoo/MSN/Google, streams Internet radio and popular online music networks such as Last.fm and Yahoo, and displays Flickr Web photo albums.

It adds personalized RSS feeds of news/weather/stock/currencies, calendar and alarm clock, and can programmed for English, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French, German, Italian or Portuguese.

Grandstream said the GXV3140 will support a greater selection of music and photo networks as well as streaming from popular video sites “in the very near future.”

In addition to serving the consumer market, Grandstream said the GXV3140 presents an attractive solution for Internet service providers, who can offer video telephony and rich multimedia applications bundled with worldwide traditional PSTN termination and E911 service.

The GXV3140 supports three independent SIP accounts, most popular voice codecs, and leverages Grandstream's field-proven, broadly interoperable SIP technology, the company said.

“The GXV3140 is the most advanced and Web-friendly IP multimedia phone on the market,” said David Li, Grandstream CEO.

The GXV3140 will be available in early May for a suggested retail of $299.
