Video, DVR Use Also Planned By Wireless Carriers

By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 3/13/2006

Sprint Nextel isn't the only carrier interested in expanding its video content or turning a cellphone into a long-distance DVR remote.

Verizon joined TiVo in announcing TiVo Mobile service, which will let consumers use their cellphones to program their TiVos from anywhere that cellular service is available. (See TiVo story on p. 53.)

For its part, Cingular expanded its video-on-demand (VOD) streaming service to offer 18 different channels of entertainment, sports and news featuring three- to five-minute clips for users of its 3G W-CDMA handsets, which are sold in the 16 markets where high-speed W-CDMA service is available. The handsets will also access the service when roaming in Cingular's lower speed EDGE markets.

Cingular Video service requires a $19.99 subscription to the MEdia Net Unlimited data package, which entitles the subscriber to all content but HBO Mobile and HBO Family Mobile, which requires an additional fee of $4.99 and $2.99 per month, respectively.

Cingular Video offers FOX News clips, news broadcasts from CNN and NBC, and content from Disney, Cartoon Network, FOX TV, ESPN and others. Addition channels planned include CBS Sportsline, made-for-mobile concert events, a weekly NASCAR program and a Turner Classic Movies' behind-the-scenes film show. RealNetworks is providing the technology for Cingular's new VOD service.
