Sanyo Updates HD Flash-Memory Camcorder

By Greg Scoblete -- TWICE, 7/13/2006

Chatsworth, Calif. — Sanyo announced a new version of its HD flash-memory video recorder today, adding a mode for recording video for iPods and portable video players.

The new Sanyo HD1a, which replaces the HD1, builds off the original 720p MPEG-4 recorder by adding a mode for snapping still pictures in 16:9, offering in-camera video editing and a new Web-SHQ mode that records 320 by 240 resolution video at 30 fps for viewing on video iPods.

The HD1a features a 2.2-inch, 210,000-pixel rotating LCD, and a 10x optical/10x digital zoom. It can snap 5-megapixel still images while simultaneously recording video. In 16:9 still mode, photos are resized to 3.8-megapixels.

The unit can store 21 minutes of HD video per gigabyte of memory, the company said. It also supports the new SDHC format, allowing the camcorder to accept SD cards up to 4GB in capacity for recording up to 84 minutes of high-definition video.

The HD1a ships in September for a suggested $699.99.

The company also introduced a new 6-megapixel splash-proof digital camera, the Xacti CA6. The unit is water resistant but not submersible. It features a 2-inch LCD, 5x optical zoom lens with electronic image stabilization and in-camera image editing.

The camera can record VGA/30 fps video and snap 6-megapixel still pictures simultaneously. It also features the Web-SHQ mode found on the HD1a for snapping video clips destined for iPods.

The CA6 ships next month for a suggested $399.99.
