Amimon Ships Gen-2 WHDI Chipset

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 4/29/2009

Santa Clara, Calif. — Wireless HD solutions developer Amimon said Tuesday it is now shipping its second-generation receiver and transmitter chipset.

The company’s AMN 2120 and 2220 were said to have been designed for the Wireless Home Digital Interface (WHDI) standard and are the first chipset capable of wirelessly delivering full uncompressed 1080p/60Hz HD content throughout a home.

The second-generation chipset is based on Amimon’s video modem technology operating in the 5GHz unlicensed band. Amimon’s first-generation chipset has been integrated into wireless HDTV products from a number of TV manufactures.

The second-generation chipset adds 1080p/60Hz and higher graphics, up to 3Gbps equivalent video rates.

The multiroom range is said to exceed 100 feet through walls, and latency is listed at less than 1ms.

It supports HDCP 2.0 copy protection, and offers low-power-consumption modes for portable devices.

Amimon said pricing on the chipset has been set to support mass adoption, and it transmits on the 5GHz unlicensed band with support for Dynamic Frequency Selection.

The chipset is built on a programmable platform that can be tuned for conformance with the WHDI standard specification. The chipset interfaces directly with the video I/O's, which is said to reduce cost from systems that require additional components such as codec chips, memory buffers and controls.

Amimon said the AMN 2120/2220 chipset will be used in CE devices including: LCD and plasma HDTVs, multimedia projectors, A/V receivers, Blu-ray Disc and  DVD players, set-top boxes, game consoles, computers, DVRs, PCs and HD video accessories/dongles, allowing wireless streaming of uncompressed HD video and audio.

Pricing for production quantities of the WHDI transmitter chipset AMN 2120/3110 is $20 and of the WHDI receiver chipset AMN 2220/3210 is $25.
