Sega Gives College Try To Sports Gaming

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 10/22/2001

Sega Sports has expanded its catalog of life-like action sports titles with the recent release of NCAA College Football 2K2 for its Dreamcast platform.

Although the game, which carries a $39.95 suggested retail, is making its debut on Dreamcast, the game developer/distributor, which recently shed its role as a platform producer, assured that versions for other platforms are in development.

The title is the first NCAA football video game introduced by Sega, and closely resembles the very popular and realistic NFL 2K and NFL 2K1 (NFL 2K2 is being released now) games that have been offered for pro football enthusiasts for several years. Sega's development house Visual Concepts produced the game over the past two years, with its customary focus on realism.

The college game differs from pro football versions with the inclusion of more college-style plays such as options. Additionally, the gameplay of each team differs to reflect the style and ability of each school. Teams known to be more run oriented will have a greater number of running plays, and passing plays may be harder to execute. Alternately, passing schools, such as Miami, will have more passing plays to choose from.

All Division I-A schools are represented in the game, along with their stadiums. The title offers a selection of gameplay modes, including Scrimmage, Single Game, Tournament, Season and Legacy. In Season mode, players will have the opportunity to win a Heisman Trophy and reach the national championship game in the Rose Bowl. It also offers online game playing ability.
