Photo Merchandise Market Grows

By Staff -- TWICE, 1/29/2007

The market for photo merchandize will exceed $800 million in 2010, according to a recent study from InfoTrends.

The category, which includes photo greeting cards, photo books, calendars, enlargements and mugs, is expected to enjoy a compound annual growth rate of 24.5 percent through 2010, the research firm noted.

Through 2006, in-store photo merchandize revenue was larger than online channels but that will change quickly, InfoTrends said, with Internet merchandizers eclipsing their brick-and-mortar counterparts.

Photo cards are the most popular form of photo merchandize, followed by specialty prints — defined as enlargements, framed photos, collages and prints on canvas media.

"This is still a largely untapped market, as only 3.5 million U.S. households made a net-to-mail or net-to-retail online purchase of personalized photo merchandise in 2006," said Alan Bullock, InfoTrends associate director, in a statement released with the findings.
