By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 1/10/2002

LAS VEGAS - Dolby Laboratories' Dolby Pro Logic II is gaining adoption in the car with several suppliers announcing new products at CES.

Dolby Pro Logic II converts any two-channel source into 5.1-channel surround sound and also creates a phantom center channel when used in a four-speaker system. It will be available in a Volvo XC90 SUV factory installed system and in aftermarket units from Alpine, Clarion and Zapco, Dolby announced. Rockford Fosgate showed the first car stereo application of Pro Logic II last year in a high-end processor.

Alpine's new unit is an add on surround sound processor which also decodes 5.1 surround sound, Dolby Digital and DTS formats. It doubles as a 1/3rd octave equalizer with digital crossover and digital time alignment.Called the PXA-H700 it will ship in May at a suggested retail price of $850.

Clarion is offering Dolby Pro Logic II in an AM/FM/CD and DVD changer controller head unit called the DXZ925 and Zapco is expected to offer Pro Logic II in an eight channel car surround decoder with custom user presets for equalization, crossover settings, time delay, and independent bass, treble and level controls.
