Flash Set To Make Inroads Into Mobile Storage Market

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 8/7/2006

Flash-memory-based solid-state drives could displace traditional hard drives in the notebook computer market within 10 years, according to a study from In-Stat.

The study, based on a survey of 389 mobile computer users, predicts that by 2013 almost 50 percent of all notebooks will use solid-state storage. In-Stat based its conclusions on the decreasing price of flash memory per gigabyte plus the added benefits flash brings to the portable computing world, such as low power consumption. However, In-Stat does not expect solid-state drives to start becoming economically viable for another four years.

In-Stat found that two-thirds of those surveyed would pay a price premium for solid-state storage for their notebook because of the expected benefits.

Samsung is now making a hybrid hard drive that features some onboard flash memory.
