Sampo Launches Sub $500 DVD Recorder

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 7/16/2003

City of Industry, Calif. - Sampo announced in Taiwan plans for its DV-R1 DVD recorder based on the DVD+RW recordable disc format.

The deck is expected to see a $499.95 retail price the company said and will incorporate Cirrus Logic’s CS92288 MPEG audio/video codec. Sales and marketing executives for the company’s U.S. sales operation, based here, could not comment on exact specifications and marketing plans in North America.

The Cirrus encoding solution is said to allow for a wide range of bit rates, enabling up to six hours of video recording on a DVD recordable disc while retaining compatibility with the installed base of DVD players.

The system is powered by a Cirrus CS98200 DVD processor, which also adds playback support for DVD-Audio and MPEG-4 simple profile. Also included is an IEEE-1394 DV input and support for Kodak Picture CD digital still photos, and MP3 and Windows Media Audio (WMA) digital audio formats.

'With the DVD+RW Recording platform from Cirrus, Sampo intends to jump-start the market for consumer-friendly, affordable DVD recorders,' said Wei-Hsu Luo, product manager of Sampo's DVD Business Department Electronics Division.
