Clarion Sells DriveEye

CYPRESS, CALIF. — Clarion said it will market an automotive video camera called the DriveEye at a suggested retail of $599 to both retailers and expediters.

The device is similar in concept to the "black box" in airplanes, recording the car's surroundings for review in case of an accident and also to "encourage driver awareness for safer driving," Clarion said.

The device is aimed initially at parents of teenage drivers and to companies that want to monitor the habits of their drivers. It mounts on the windshield behind the rear-view mirror and records at 30 fps. It starts recording during braking or acceleration and is able to record 15 seconds before impact or a triggered event and five seconds afterward. Users can also manually trigger the Drive Eye.
