Shopping list: Bread, Milk And An Ancient Laptop

Recently while standing in line at the customer service counter of my local Pathmark supermarket, I overheard a mom ask the sales person if the store still had any of those Dell notebooks available.

I stopped picking my New York Lottery numbers long enough to look up and watch the salesperson turn around and pick up a small box marked Dell and hand it to the woman. It was stacked right in front of the cigarettes. She rang it up for $399.

TALKBACK:

In response to: Wattles Seeks Ouster Of Circuit City's Board, Bill Penn, Reno, Nev., financial analyst: "Whether Wattles makes a difference with CC is open to question. Perhaps a new board and upper management the company will be able to reinvent itself. But what's more likely is that after the stockholder meeting, Schoonover will be out, the company will replace all of its top execs (who will get the retention packages since they vest immediately upon a change in control), and become another Ultimate Electronics clone. Not that that's a bad thing, just that getting the share price back to where it was when Schoonover took over will take a lot of pruning. Shrinking the chain by closing marginal stores in weak markets will bring the biggest return to investors. Don't be surprised if CC is half its current size by FYE 2009"

In response to: Sears' Sales And Earnings Tumble, George Snead: "Sears may want to think about going back to some basics, especially in the marketing of majaps. For many years, Sears dominated in this category. For a salesperson in appliances, Sears was the place to be. Not only were the commissions and benefits excellent for the Sears associate in majors. Sears was known as the gold standard for sales excellence, through training and support from management. Today, you cannot get a full time position with benefits. Service and support has suffered to such an extent that customers question the value of extended warranties. Actually, Sears may just want to get out of appliances altogether, unless they are willing to devote their resources to rebuilding this business from the ground up."
