RPTV Remains Best Super Big Screen Value

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 8/25/2008

Portland, Ore. – A new retail display study by QuixelResearch has found that for very large screen TV, microdisplay rear projection models are the best value.

The market research firm’s “MicroDisplay Rear Projection Market Review for Q2 2008” found that the value and volume increased for 60-inch and larger screen sizes during the second quarter.

“The market has changed and there is no value for 42-, 46- and 50-inch microdisplay (MD) rear projection TVs (RPTVs), but there is great value in the screen sizes above 60 inches,” stated Tamaryn Pratt, Quixel Research principal. “True big screen enthusiasts can purchase a 60- or 65-inch for $2,000 or less, even 73-inch models are available for under $3,000 day in and day out, and there is really not a comparable flat TV offering to compete with those price points.”

In the second quarter 2008 the 60-inch and larger segment increased unit sales 67 percent compared to the first quarter and 23 percent compared to the second quarter of 2007.

In unit share, the 60-inch-and-over market segment accounted for 86 percent of the total MD category in the second quarter of 2008. That is more than double the second quarter 2007 share results of 32 percent.

Quixel pointed out that the MD RPTV category is “now operating in niche model,” which resulted in flat revenue and volume for the category in the second quarter. Revenue was off 2 percent or $257 million in the period compared to $262 million in the first quarter of 2008. Volume for the second quarter was 136,000 units compared to 136,000 in the first quarter.

The total value of the advanced TV market in the U.S. was worth almost $7 billion in revenues in the second quarter 2008 and the MD RPTV segment represented close to 4 percent of that market in revenues and 2 percent in volume, Quixel said.
