Epson To Ship Two New Megapixel Units

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 7/12/1999

Epson today introduced the megapixel PhotoPC 650 and PhotoPC 800 digital cameras

Both cameras are USB enabled, allowing each to work with Apple G3 and iMac computers, said Lisa Dempsey, assistant digital camera product manager for Epson. The USB capability speeds up the data transfer rate so a 700KB image file can be downloaded in about 10 seconds.

The PhotoPC 650 will carry an estimated street price of $349 when it starts shipping next week. Its CCD can capture 1.09 million pixel images, which are stored on an 8MB CompactFlash card. The CompactFlash card comes with a USB adapter cable. The adapter is plugged into a PC's USB port, allowing the images to be directly downloaded into a computer. The 650's lens area is threaded to take additional lenses, and the camera features a 1.8-inch LCD.

The PhotoPC 800, scheduled to ship in mid-August with a $699 estimated street price, is targeted at the photo enthusiast and business-class customer. The 2.14-megapixel camera also features a 1.8-inch LCD. The camera has the ability to interpolate the image up to 3 megapixels in size. This allows 11 x 14-inch prints to be made, compared to the 8 x 10-inch size possible with an uninterpolated image.

The camera comes standard with an 8MB CompactFlash card, but where its less expensive cousin requires a USB adapter cable, the 800 itself is USB and serial port ready. All of the camera's photo functions, focus, shutter speed, exposure, aperture and white balance modes can be operated automatically or manually by the end user.

The 650 is bundled with PictureWorks HotShots software, while the 800 comes with Sierra Imaging's Image Expert.

Epson will continue its program, started with the introduction of the PhotoPC 700, of offering a $50 off coupon to consumers who purchase both a camera and any Epson inkjet printer. With the PhotoPC 650 a consumer can take home a complete digital camera kit, containing the printer, for less than $500, after rebate.
