Motorola Targets Resellers For Direct Sales Of Pagers

By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 1/29/2001

BOYNTON BEACH, FLA. -Motorola has expanded its pager-distribution options with the launch of a direct-sales program designed mainly for paging-service resellers, but the company isn't excluding retailers from the program.

Under the program, select one-way Flex pagers can be purchased direct from Motorola in minimum quantities of 10 by credit card or c.o.d. The devices, which Motorola will program, are the Talkabout T350 word pager and BR850 and Talkabout T10 numerics.

Turnaround time of 48 hours from order to arrival time is promised. Resellers can order by calling (800) 888-4951 or faxing (800) 825-5780. Resellers will take title to the devices, making it unnecessary for cash-strapped carriers to tie up their dollars or time.

"It's meant to quickly get product to resellers and alleviate the financial aspects of carriers carrying inventory," distribution marketing director Amy Kabcenell explained. Also, she said, "there are costs involved with multiple people touching the hardware."

Depending on the program's success, Motorola might extend it to two-way messaging devices, Kabcenell added.

Motorola continues to sell pagers direct to carriers, who in turn sell them to retailers and resellers. It also sells to distributors targeting small carriers and some resellers.

"Most product sold through retail is still distributed via the carrier," Kabcenell said. A growing portion of sales is also coming through a program in which Motorola ships pagers direct to retailers and resellers on a carrier's behalf, but the carrier owns the inventor, she said.
