PDAs, Peripherals Shine During PC Expo

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 7/9/2001

PDAs and peripherals garnered most of the spotlight at June's PC Expo, but unlike past years, a few personal computers were introduced by Sony, Hewlett-Packard and UMAX at what turned out to be a smaller-than-expected show.

The 2001 version of PC Expo was not as large as last year's show, leaving a large amount of empty floor space in the main hall of the Jacob Javits Convention Center here. A PC Expo spokesperson said preliminary attendance figures are in the 45,000 to 50,000 range with about 500 exhibitors on the show floor — down in both cases from last year. The PC Expo Web sites indicated about 80,000 people were expected this year.

However, the lower than expected turnout did not deter the exhibitors.

The DVD+RW Alliance continued its battle against rewritable DVD competitor DVD-RAM by announcing ship dates for several products, while DVD-RAM promoter Panasonic showed its most recent wares. Imation unveiled its first DataPlay hardware and blank media. Handheld computer makers Sony and Casio introduced new products and services, and Intel and AMD were on hand hawking even faster processors.
