HP Debuts All-In-One Units, Printers

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 8/31/1999

Hewlett-Packard debuted its most extensive lineup to date in printers and imaging with some of the fastest printers and aggressive multifunction products (MFPs) in their classes.

Said Gary Peterson, senior analyst for ARS, La Jolla, Calif., "The sheet-fed T series is the most impressive announcement I've seen in the MFP industry in two years. The print speeds are up to par with single function printers for the first time. They are the most feature-rich MFPs with functions such as one-touch scanning and user-adjustable copy ratios on the face of the machine instead of requiring the user go to the computer."

Among the sixteen new products debuted by Hewlett-Packard on Monday are several printers including the photo-quality Desk Jet 970 series and PhotoSmart P1100 at $399 and $499 estimated street prices. Both are based on a new platform with photo ret III technology that supplies 50 percent faster firing times. Print speeds are up to 12 pages per minute (ppm) in black and 10 ppm in color. The 970 and P1100 also allow automatic double-sided printing so customers can print on both sides of the page without any manual intervention. A new P1000 and P1100 both have built in slots for CompactFlash or Smart Media cards, allowing users to print images directly from a digital camera without requiring a PC. The printers also have photo manipulation functions directly on the front panel -- again, circumventing the need for a PC.

Also new (with photo ret II) is the Desk Jet 830 aimed at home users for an estimated street price of $199.

Hewlett-Packard 's all-in-one products include the Office Jet T series which are sheet fed, all color copier/printer, scanner and fax machines and which bring photo ret II technology to the MFP for the first time. They feature improved print speeds of up to 11 ppm in black and 8.5 ppm in color. Estimated street prices start at $499.

Hewlett-Packard also debuted it first flat bed all-in-one printer/copier/scanner aimed at the home market for an estimated street price of $399. Called the model PSC 500 it is similar to the R80 series and produces color copies at 3 copies per minute (cpm) color and 5 cpm black. Print speeds are 9 ppm in black and 6.5 in color. Shipping is scheduled for October 1.

Two new digital cameras from HP include the C200 entry-level camera at $299 estimated street price and the C500 with 2X optical zoom, 3X digital zoom and infra red at $799.

In scanners, three new Professional Series models are the fastest for the company, with the highest dpi starting at $399 for the ScanJet 6300C while the ScanJet 6450 and 6390 add an ADF. Also new is a ScanJet 3300C color scanner, expected to sell for about $149.
