HP Brings Consumer-Targeted Minis To Market

PALO ALTO, CALIF. — Hewlett-Packard is bringing to market its first consumer-targeted mini PC, the HP Mini 1000.
HP described the Atom-based devices as "companion PCs" and said they are "geared towards information snacking and content enjoyment vs. the content creation capability found in fully functional notebook PCs."
The notebooks measure less than 1 inch thick and weigh 2.25 pounds. The size of the keyboard is said to be 92 percent that of a standard PC keyboard.
The Mini 1000 with a piano-black finish and HP Imprint swirl design is available now in the U.S. at a starting price of $399. It runs Windows XP Home and features an Ethernet jack, two USB ports, a built in Web cam and microphone and offers wireless connectivity through WLAN. It will be available in two screen sizes, either 8.9 inches or 10.2 inches, and can come with either a solid-state or mechanical hard drive. HP said a 3G version is expected to be available in December.
Also launching in December will be the HP Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam edition which comes in red featuring a peony-flower inspired design that reflects fashion designer Tam's Spring 2009 collection; it was unveiled in September on the runway during Tam's Fall 2009 Fashion Week show in New York.
The PC features a 10.2-inch widescreen, runs Windows XP home and has 1GB of memory. Like HP's other model, the Tam version also offers an Ethernet jack, two USB ports, a built-in Web cam and microphone and WLAN connectivity. It ships with an embroidered protective sleeve and will be available starting at $699.
Finally, HP also said it plans to unveil a Linux-based version of the Mini 1000 in January that will be called the HP Mini 1000 with MIE. It will have the same ports and connectivity options as the other two models, but it features an intuitive interface developed by HP that will allow the user to browse the Web, email, watch video, chat and more by using the MIE dashboard. It is expected to start at $379.
Each of the Mini 1000s comes with a free six-month subscription to HP's Upline service for up to three PCs. The service allows for secure online storage, backup and synchronization of digital content.
