Rayovac Announces Rechargeable Battery Technology

By Jeff Malester -- TWICE, 3/19/2002

Madison, Wis. - Rayovac said it can reduce battery charging time to 15 minutes or less, thanks to its 'revolutionary' new rechargeable technology, called In-Cell Charge Control, or, simply, I-C3.

In digital cameras, Rayovac claims its new I-C3 nickel metal hydride (NiMH) AA battery will deliver up to four times more shots than an alkaline battery, and more than any comparable-size lithium ion battery, based on current American National Standards Institute battery tests.

'This dramatic rechargeable breakthrough will allow design engineers to offer consumers unparalleled improvements in performance and convenience,' said Dave Jones, Rayovac chairman/CEO. 'We can now offer OEMs the longest-lasting, fastest-charging battery technology ever, for many of their current electronic devices and their future technology-based applications.

Rayovac said its patent-pending I-C3 technology puts the control of recharging into the battery, rather than the recharger. The NiMH technology is expected to produce batteries that will be the longest-lasting rechargeable types - up to four times over regular single-use alkalnes - for such devices as digital cameras, MP3 players and cellphones. Batteries can be recharged up to 1,000 times.
